National College Health Assessment Survey
The National College Health Assessment (NCHA) gathers data about college students' health habits, behaviors and perceptions. Different colleges and universities from all over the United States participate in the survey every year. Our first efforts at obtaining a "snapshot" of our student's health were in Spring 2003 and Fall 2005. In Fall 2005, four thousand surveys were randomly mailed to currently attending CSU, Stanislaus students. Our return rate was only 10% in this first effort. We will participate in the survey again in the Fall of 2007 and hope to increase the response rate significantly.
Your participation in the NCHA is very important to us! The data gathered with the NCHA helps us to:
- better understand students' health trends
- determine the health areas of highest priority for students
- identify the most common risks to academic performance and retention
- design new health programs and evaluate current strategies
- compare CSU Stanislaus data with national, aggregate NCHA data
- and so much more!
Interesting Fact:
Since 2000, the top five impediments to academic performance in colleges across the country have not changed. They are:
- Stress
- Cold/flu
- Sleep difficulties
- Concern for a friend or family member
- Depression/anxiety disorder
In Fall 2005 CSU Stanislaus students had a slightly different list of top five impediments to academic performance:
- Stress
- Cold/flu
- Concern for a troubled friend or family member
- Sleep difficulties
- Relationship difficulties
